HR 580 LC 24 0822

                            A RESOLUTION

1- 1 Honoring the Honorable Sonny Dixon; and for other purposes.

1- 2 WHEREAS, Sonny Dixon has served in the Georgia House of
1- 3 Representatives as the Representative from the 150th
1- 4 District, which is West Chatham County, since 1988. He has
1- 5 tackled the tough issues and served on the key committees of
1- 6 Appropriations, Rules, Transportation, and Interstate
1- 7 Cooperation, on which he serves as vice-chairman; and

1- 8 WHEREAS, one would think that such a dignified and important
1- 9 man would not be caught dead in a kilt or singing Celtic
 1-10  songs with little or no inducement, but one would be wrong;
 1-11 and

1-12 WHEREAS, Sonny is a 44 year old native of Savannah and is
1-13 married to the lovely and loving former Margaret Kellam of
1-14 Garden City. Together they have a wonderful daughter, 15
1-15 year old Emily. Sonny also has two terrific kids from his
1-16 first marriage, Amy Dixon O'Donnell and Daniel Dixon. Soon,
1-17 Sonny will have to face his mortality as he will become a
1-18 doting grandfather in June; and

1-19 WHEREAS, being such a fan of coastal Georgia, Sonny likes to
1-20 delay his trips to Atlanta as long as possible. This fact
1-21 combined with his love of race cars and car racing has led
1-22 Sonny to come very close to breaking the land speed record
1-23 on the highways between Atlanta and Savannah and to blow
1-24 three Jeep engines before he listened to his inner voice and
 1-25 bought another Ford; and

1-26 WHEREAS, in 1988, Sonny was named Savannah's Man of the Year
1-27 and graduated from Leadership Savannah with the James Deason
1-28 Leadership Award as the most outstanding graduate. In 1989,
1-29 Sonny expanded his horizons and graduated from Leadership
1-30 Georgia with honors and acclaim; and

1-31 WHEREAS, despite these serious undertakings and other awards
1-32 and accomplishments too numerous to name here, Sonny will
1-33 likely only be remembered by his colleagues in the House for
1-34 a silly Irish toast annually delivered on St. Patrick's Day
1-35 and his evasive response to the question "What's worn
 1-36 beneath the kilt?"; and

                                -1-

2- 1 WHEREAS, presently, Sonny serves on the Boards of the
2- 2 Georgia Council on Moral and Civic Concerns and the Chamber
2- 3 of Commerce for West Chatham County. Sonny also serves on
2- 4 the selection committee for the Georgia Aviation Hall of
2- 5 Fame. Wearing yet another hat, he is first lieutenant
2- 6 commander of the Francis S. Bartow Camp of the Sons of
2- 7 Confederate Veterans. Most importantly, though, he is a
2- 8 Convener of the Clan Keith Scottish Heritage Society and
2- 9 keeper of the faith; and

2-10 WHEREAS, Sonny is many things, but he is no fashion plate.
2-11 As a guest at one of the Governor's formal black tie
2-12 dinners, Sonny showed up in tux pants and a blue blazer due
 2-13  allegedly to a dark closet combined with a dimly lit room;
 2-14 and

2-15 WHEREAS, however attired, Sonny has made important promises
2-16 to his constituents and kept them. He gained the trust,
2-17 respect, and friendship of the people in his district by
2-18 opposing unwanted consolidations and annexations while
2-19 supporting an open annexation process; he aided the cause of
2-20 coastal dwelling senior citizens; he brought much needed
2-21 funding for highway construction and paved streets to his
2-22 district; he supported Georgia ports; and most difficult, he
2-23 kept West Chatham County whole in the reapportionment
 2-24 process; and

2-25 WHEREAS, Sonny managed to accomplish so much while
2-26 steadfastly maintaining that any philosophy inconsistent
2-27 with the writings of the late Lewis Grizzard and the songs
2-28 of Jimmy Buffet "ain't worth considerin'"; and

2-29 WHEREAS, in the past when he was not on the beach at Tybee
2-30 Island or at the State Capitol, Sonny has appeared on the
2-31 CBS Nightly News with Dan Rather, on CNN, in Newsweek
2-32 magazine, and in several major market newspapers; and

2-33 WHEREAS, Sonny is simply a doer, whatever the task. He has
2-34 been known to fix a dying car with a wad of chewing gum on
2-35 one day and to organize historic tours of England in honor
2-36 of the three hundredth birthday of Georgia's founder,
2-37 General James Oglethorpe, on the next; and

2-38 WHEREAS, Sonny is a staunch defender of the Georgia flag and
2-39 a proponent of anything "made in the USA"; and

 2-40 WHEREAS, a renaissance man, a leader, a wit, a charmer, a
2-41 public servant. Sonny is all of these things, and as he
2-42 retires from this body and returns to his native Savannah,

                                -2-

3- 1 he will be sorely missed by all who have worked with and for
 3- 2 him.

3- 3 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
3- 4 that the members of this body honor the Honorable Sonny
3- 5 Dixon on the occasion of his retirement from this body and
3- 6 wish him all the best in the future.

3- 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
3- 8 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
3- 9 appropriate copy of this resolution to Representative Sonny
 3-10 Dixon.
